These are my notes for the lecture video on Last Things. Before I watched it, I did not know much about the Catholic after-death beliefs. This video gave me a clear understanding of the four last things after death: judgement, heaven, hell, and purgatory. Definitions, deeper meanings, and impacts of these are outlined in my notes.

MR 5.E Teaching and Sanctifying Church
For section 5.E we made an idea sketch over the role of the apostles. We broke it into 2 sections named Apostolic Succession and Apostolic Chronology. Apostolic Succession- The line succession from the Apostles all the way to the Bishops today. Apostolic Chronology- After Christ's death the Apostles took over the church.
MR 5.F Last Things
5.F was about the Final Things. These final things are judgment, heaven, purgatory, and hell. Each one of these has a distinct meaning but comes back to one central topic; communion with God. You must be in communion with God to gain entrance to heaven.
The Final Things
-Judgment
-Heaven
-Purgatory
-Hell
Last Judgment
-When Christ will come again.
-When the world will end
The time to cooperate with grace so as to achieve salvation is NOW, during our life on earth.
-after death it is too late.
-you must be in communion with God when you die to get into heaven, and since only God knows when we are going to die we must always be in communion with him
Particular Judgment
-judgment God makes upon each soul immediately at death of either eternal communion with God (Heaven), temporary purification (purgatory), or eternal seperation (Hell).
-God decides which of these is the right place for each and every human being
Are we turning towards the light or darkness?
-even though we may turn towards the darkness at some points in life, at death we must be on the side of the light
Beatific Vision
-Face-to-face contemplation of the glory of God.
-Heaven is Bliss.
Heaven
-God, the angels, and those human beings in Heaven are in communion.
Purgatory
-To free the soul of every attachment of sin as to be fit for heaven.
Purgatory is Temporary
-Every soul in purgatory is assured of the eventual attainment of heaven.
Purgatory is a State Not a Place
-souls, being immaterial spirits, do not occupy space
-the state they experience is seperation from God
Hell
-the state of eternal self-exclusion from communion with God and the blessed
How Does a Person End Up in Hell?
-By dying in the state of mortal sin without repentance
Why is there No Happiness in Hell?
-The sould is sperated from God in whome alonecan possess the life and happiness for which he was created and for which he longs.

MR 5.F Analysis on Last Things
Stephen and I chose the Analysis Topic: Problem Solving
The Problem Solving Analysis states: A man was nearing the end of his life. He bragged about how he rejected God was never baptized and became an athiest. He got cancer and had a change of heart. You heard he met with a priest a few times before he died. What are his redemptive options upon his death?
The Man has two choices: 1)Accept God and Everything that He does for us, and 2)opt to reject or ignore his gift of salvation.
If the man were to choose the first choice, he would enter into the state of Purgatory(if he was in complete holiness with God, he'd go straight to heaven.) Purgatory is not a place, rather a state. Because our body does not enter it, our soul does.
What is Soul? The soul is the spiritual or immaterial part of a human-- regarded as immortal. This is one of the God given aspects as humans.
If we go back into the section about Last Things, we come across the topic of Particular Judgment. Particular Judgment is the Judgement at the moment of death, the soul is judged by God and rewarded with eternal communion with God in Heaven-- Either Immidiately or following purification in Purgatory
Now we have the second Redemptive Option: Rejection of God
To reject God is a spiritual death sentence. By choosing to reject God, you are damned to live a life a suffering after death. At the Time of Particular Judgment and/ or Final judgment, you must commit to God, otherwise you will not find eternal hapiness in heaven. Furthurmore, if the man chose to reject God, his soul would forever remain in Hell. (remember it's a state! not a place!)
How did we recieve this redemptive choice?
First off, God always had a plan for salvation, however it wasn't untill he sent Jesus Christ, his son to save us all.
Through his Passion, Death, and Resurrection, Jesus Christ opened the gates of Heaven, which is an essential part of redemption.

MR 5.E Analysis Early Church
Conclude what the early Church’s view of Church leadership and Apostolic succession was:
The Letter I chose was from Smyrneans:
One reocurring theme in this passage are Bishops. Bishops play a huge role in the Catholic Church. The word 'Bishop' itself means, Offic Holder or Caretaker. You see, when Christ ascended into Heaven to be with the Father, he needed to leave someone here on Earth to guide and lead us down the right path.
Here are a few quotes from Letters to the Smyrneans:
*"You should all follow the bishop as Jesus Christ did the Father."
*"It is a fine thing to acknowledge God and the bishop."
*"He who pays the bishop honor has been honored by God."
*"But he who acts without the bishop’s knowledge is in the devil’s service."
The Church Concludes:
-Leadership comes in a many forms, in the Catholic Church, the Bishop is our Leader
-He who follows the Bishop, will follow the path of righteousness. Therefore, those who do not follow the Bishop, will be "in the devil's service."
-If they fail to believe in Christ’s blood, they too are doomed.
-The Bishop, who in the chain of succession, is the successor to JC.
-The Bishops of the world are good.
Stephen's Letter: Philidelphians
Conclude what the early Church’s view of Church leadership and Apostolic succession was:
"Sheep will follow the sheperd" -- whoever leads the doctrine of the church down a derogative path, they will lead everyone down a bad and/ or sinful path
Priests are "good"-- God said his creations were "good"
Key Ideas:
"Keep away from bad pasturage. Christ did not cultivate it because the Father did not plan it."
"Observe a single Eucharist For there is one flesh our Lord, JC, and one cup of blood that makes us one, and one altar, just as there is one boshop along with the presbytery..."
-here We have the reoccurring mark of the Church: One
Ex: One Church, One Body, One Bishop, One Lord
As Long as the Bishop is good, then those who follows will be good. They will be pleased by God.
MR 5.E Magisterium and Apostles
The early church believed that the main leader of the church was God. God delegated his authority to Christ and the Apostles, who were also leaders of the church. The Apostles traveled around Israel and nearby areas establishing churches and appointing men to assist in their ministry. The men appointed became bishops, the first Church officials. The word bishop means "office holder" in Greek. Transitioning to the present day, these bishops, directly descended from the first bishops, are the Apostles of today. They are direct descendants of the Apostles through apostolic succession. Apostolic succession is chain of descendants all the way from the Apostles to the bishops.

MR 5.D Apostolic Succession
Where do we see evidence of Apostolic authority and succession in scripture? Why is that important today?
Above is the question proposed on my Instructor's Moodle Page... Below is my analysis& answer
Where do we see evidence of Apostolic authority and succession in scripture?
-St Jerome speaks:
"Far be it from me to speak adversely of any of these clergy who, in succession from the apostles, confect by their sacred word the Body of Christ and through whose efforts also it is that we are Christians" (Letters 14:8 [A.D. 396]).
-Here we see in scripture, "in succession from the apostles" that after JC, he would need a "replacement" figure to initiate the sacraments.
We also see this in the Book of Luke
-Luke 9:1; 10:19 - Jesus gives the apostles authority over the natural and the supernatural (diseases, demons, serpents, and scorpions).
-Luke 10:16 - Jesus tells His apostles, "he who hears you, hears Me." When we hear the bishops' teaching on the faith, we hear Christ Himself.
Why is the Apostollic Authority and Succession important today?
-The handing down of Authority is especially important today because without that action of physically handing the Authority, in this case forgiveness of sins and/ or other sacraments, none of the seven Sacraments could be performed.
-You see, at the time JC gave Peter and the Apostles the Authority to perform the Sacraments, this marked the period of Apostolic Authority and Succession.
-The Chain of Succession goes like this:
JC -- Peter & Apostles -- Church Bishops, Priests and Pope
MR 5.B Analysis: Kingdom of God
We start off with Peter, John, and Acts. They wre all Apostles (Paul being the Apostle in Acts), which through them, by Christ, they built the Church. Through the Church we find the Kingdom of God on Earth, as well as the Body of Christ. Through the Church, we receive the sacrament of Baptism. Through this sacrament we are forgiven of sins and receive the grace of redemption. The forgiveness of sins leads to being in Union with God. From that, we go to the Kingdom of God and the Chosen people that enter the Kingdom. Back to the Union of God, we go to the Belief of Christ, which means we beliee in the Paschal Mystery (3 Things.) Also, by believing in Christ, we believe that he gave the Authority to forive sins to his successors.

MR 5.C No Salvation Outside the Church Analysis
This IdeaSketch analyzes the role of the Church in Baptism and salvation. It outlines the Church's policy, quotes Scripture, and uses practical examples to analyze the concept of salvation and the Church's place in it, a very contentious issue.
MR 5.B Kingdom of God
This IdeaSketch outlines the different parts of the Kingdom of God. It goes over key terms such as salvation, baptism, and the parts of the Church, and how they tie into the Kingdom. It connects Scripture passages, and goes in-depth to analyze the Kingdom.

MR 5.C Mystical Body of Christ
This is our analysis over the mystical body of Christ. We took an in depth route of analyzing the phrase "No Salvations Outside the Church". We explained how the church is the universal sacrament of salvation. We also analyzed how Christ is the first begotten son of God. If you worship a different church from the Catholic Church you will be barred from salvation.

MR 5.A Analysis Idea Sketch
My group of Noah Garcia, Joe Allee, Jacob Piekelniak, and myself made an IdeaSketch. We emphasized the complicated nature of the concept of the descent of the Holy Spirit, and had several different layers of material. First, we have basic key terms outlining the concept, we have a chronology explaining what the event of the Descent is, and we have study questions that show a deeper level of understanding, with explanations as to why the event is significant.

MR 5.A Analysis on the Pentecost
My most recent analysis explains the connection between our chapter and the article about the soul with Sanctifying Grace/ Actual Grace. It Gives the definitions of both Graces, and tells why we have them/ what they're for. Next, it gives a thorough example about how our souls "live." Finally, it analyzes the reasons why our soul needs God's Grace to enter Heaven.
Grace
The two kinds of grace are sanctifying and actual. Sanctifying and actual grace are very different things. Sanctifying grace stays in the soul while actual grace does not. Actual grace is a boost to sanctifying grace. Sanctifying grace is like God and actual grace would be the priests and desciples teaching Gods ways. Your soul doesn't have the equipment to get you into heaven alone. It needs grace to get you there.
This is my analysis. I took an in depth look at this article and analyzed it. I used previous knowledge and combined it with knowledge learned from the article.
MR 5.A Analysis Task -- Grace
First off, what is the definition of Grace? Grace is: (google definition)simple elegance or refinement of movement. Whereas our text's definition states: The free and undeserved gift of God to respong to one's vocation to become his adopted son or daughter.
On main subject our course has been over is Redemption. In order for us to be redeemed, our souls must be in a state of grace. However our we are born with an "untouched" soul. By this, I mean our soul is not "equipped" with the correct graces of God. It soul is deemed unworthy to be in heaven.
The example the article gives explains why a human cannot live at the bottom of the ocean by ourselves. The answer: simply because our body is unequipped to live there, just like our soul is unequipped to live in heaven.
The difference between Sanctifying grace and Actual Grace is.... Sanctifying Grace is a a grace that physically stays in your soul, whereas Actual Grace is a supernatural force, or push of encouragement.

MR 5.A Ascension Analysis
Acts 1
1. Jesus gives the Apostles instructions regarding the Holy Spirit, gave conceiving proofs He was alive, and spoke about God's Kingdom. This all happened over a period of 40 days.
2. Redemption is about being absolved of your sins and coming into communion with God.
3. Redemption is given to one by the Holy Spirit when he/she accepts Christ as their savior and strives to live like him.
Ascension
4.18; Ascension:
The Resurrection signified Christ's victory over sin and death and initiated his glorification.
Through Christ's new/ glorified body, He now transcends (to be and/ or go beyond limits) human time and space.
After this event, his followers could now fully recognize him. (Before the ascension, JC's followers could not immediately recognize him)
-Quote From CCC 659: "During the forty days when he eats and drinks familiarly with his disciples and teaches them about the kingdom, his glory remains veiled under the appearance eof ordinary humanity. Jesus' final apparition ends with the irresversible entry of his humanity into divine glory, symbolized by the cloud and by heaven, where he is seated from that time forward at God's right hand."
Near the end of JC's time, Jesus spent most of his time teaching/ instructing his Apostles as well as confirming them in their faith.
This is where the Catholic Church gets the practice of CConfirmation.
During this time, JC was also preparing them for the Holy Spirit. (hint: Pentecost)
Christ's mission was fulfilled and his glorification completed with his Ascension into Heaven. With his Apostles gathered around him, Christ ascened Body and Soul into Heaven in a clear manisfestation of his divinity.
By ascending into Heaven, Christ opened the gates to Heaven for the rest of his Church
Christ's Final instructions before he left the physical world was: they were to define the misson of the Apostles and the Church until the end of time. He wanted them to evanglize all nations.
Christ emphasized that it was necessary for him to leave the earth and be with his father in heaven. He would remain here with us spiritually.
The Ascension of our Lord also initiated another kind of relationship between himself and his Church-- a relationship founded on a life of faith, hope, and love.
MR 5.A The Ascension
The Ascension
-The resurrection glorified Christ's body
-Christ's new body transcended time and space
-Ascenion completes God's glorification
-Christ prepared his Apostles to recieve the Holy Spirit just before his ascension
-Christ's body and soul ascended into heaven.
-after his ascension he is placed at the right hand of the father
-before ascnending Christ told the Apostles to evangelize all nations
-it was necesarry for Christ to leave earth and return to his father
-Christ's ascension paved the way for the Holy Spirit to descend onto the Apostles
-The ascension of Christ overall made him more accesible and reachable by earthly humans through prayer

MR 4.F Forgiveness of Sins Analysis
This is an educreations presentation by Okelberry, Burton, and Garcia. We analyzed the redemption and forgiveness of sin through Christ, as well as the importance and authority of the sacrament of Reconciliation. This is a very informational and analytical presentation that you will get a lot out of.
MR. 4.F: Significance of the Resurrection
For our analysis we chose option three. For option three we answered and analyzed two general question. We not only answered the questions but expanded, using our knowledge to take the EDUcreations to a further level of perfection. Here is our perfection.
Authority of Forgiveness
- PROBLEM SOLVING: How are our sins forgiven? How does Christ explain/set it up?
- give evidence and explanations
- include the importance of this section
God (trinity) alone has the authority to forgive sins. "the Son of man has authority on earth to forgive sins" (Matt. 9:6) Here in the Book of Matthew, we have the evidence that JC has that authority. Because he IS God. Christ explains it as only God, which he is can forgive sins and only those who he annoints can forgive sins; his successors. Jesus gave the authority to Peter, and Peter to his successor and to his and so on.
The importance of this section is to show us that God truly loves us, and no matter what will forgive us. However we must 1) Ask God for forgiveness, or 2) go to reconciliation to seek out a man who has the authority, by god, to forgive us.
Problem Solving - Mr Healey's Tweet
What Mr Healey says is true because it would be extremely unlikely for so many matyrs to die for something that wasn't true. They MUST have truly seen Jesus Christ in order for them to give their lives up believe in what is right. If not, this means that the martyrs of christ purposely lied about it. Meaning, they gave up their lives just for the heck of it. Who even does that?
@Dragonblaze is wrong because for one, Mr Healey was talking about a single event, witnesses ACTUALLY seeing the Resurrection of JC, and not martyrs who heard about it and that died hundreds of years after.
Faith needs Fact& vice versa
JC Resurrection cannot be falsified because in order for someone to have a belief, or faith in something, you must come to accept something as fact and or real. The followers had full confidence in JC; comeplete trust.
So you see, the martyrs of Christ came to accept that/ believed that Christ had risen and therefore, died for what they saw and or believed.

MR 4.E Resurrection Analysis
Our analysis is unique because it goes over multiple facets of the Resurrection. We analyze the historical context, the mindsets of people around it, and proof that it happened. Our presentation is easy to follow and breaks down the material into good analysis. We chose this topic because the reading on it is very interesting and there is a lot to analyze.
Jesus's Bones
This is our idea sketch. It shows the difference in two opinions on what would happen if Jesus's bones were discovered. It is unique because we used our knowledge and understanding to take a deeper route of explanation on the topic. We chose this topic because we found it the most interesting of the three. It should be considered an analysis because we deeply analyzed the material.

Analysis & Exit ticket

Click the link above to be taken to a ThingLink with the topic of 'What Jesus' resurrected body was like and how it compares and contrasts to his body before the resurrection, the transfiguration, and the hope of ours.
Exit Ticket~ Jesus' resurrecrtion was not a myth. It was historically fact. Our ThingLink is unique because it explains key points about the resurrection and transfiguration. We chose to make a ThingLink because to us, a ThingLink includes a visual aid, which some people find very helpful and its also an easy, assesable way to learn. This is mini project should be considered an analysis because it doesn't give a summary of the resurrection, rather answers the "why" questions.

MR 4.D Purgatory Analysis
https://www.educreations.com/lesson/view/purgatory/25729018/?s=Pz4k06&ref=app
Our group analyzed Purgatory, the Catholic Church's teaching on it, and a useful metaphor to explain it. We go over the basic concept, as well as the essential points of the doctrine, and some history of the term.
Gandolf vs The Balrog
Gandolf and his followers (the fellowship of the rings) are together. As the Balrog chases them the followers abandon him. This sybolizes the apostles leaving Jesus and betraying him. Then as Gandolf and the Balrog travel down this symbolizes Jesus decending to hell. Then Gandolf slays Balrog and dies on the mountain. Then it shows Gandolf coming back to life. This symbolizes Jesus healing our sins with his crucifixion and then rising from the dead.
Lord of the Rings Analogy
Passion... Whilst in the mountain, gandalf knows what lurks in the shadows, and this we can makke a connection to the passion of christ. Gandalf walks into the mountain and in some sense "prays" for thisto not be the way. Like JC did in the garden.
Gandalf/JC death... In the first movie, Gandalf fights this large dark creature from "hell." The connection we can make from this is that Gandalf knows he is going to die and he willingly gives his life to save the others-- his family.
Resurrection...In the second movie of the Lord of the Rings, "Two Towers", Gandalf appears to Aragorn, Legolas, and Gimi as this white, mystical being. Here we can make a connection to the resurrection and or transfiguration. When Gandalf appears to them he shines brighter than any light-- just like JC's transfiguration. We also make the connection to his resurrection because here, Gandalf has been "reborn" or "came back" from the dead-- he 'died' as Gandalf the Grey and came back as Gandalf the White. Aragorn, at the scene would be catagorized as "Doubting Thomas." Aragorn says, "it cannot be" and is in disbelief. The third movie we see Aragorn summoning up the dead to fight with him, to come back to the world and he will "hold their outh fulfilled." The connection we make here with JC in purgatory. Aragorn represents JC and the dead witchking represents satan... however in this case the witchking fights for JC--this is the "hollywood effect of a movie."-- however the mountain aragorn goes into is said to be a mountain of no return. Whoever goes in, dies a horrible death. But in this case, Aragorn--being the JC character-- walks into this mountain and returns with all the souls. He saves them all.

Justin Martyr's
This document ultimately talks about the Mass. And in the mass we have this last supper (this is the correlation to our topic). In the first paragraph, we see that it is talking about the Administration of the Sacraments, and in the case, the Eucharist. Next we have the Eucharist, the actual body and blood of Jesus Christ. And finally, we have the weekly worship as christians.
Back to the first paragraph, we see how the Eucharist will be given to us, and also the way it is performed. Next, the actual Eucharist; Jesus Christ instituted this event at the Last Supper and said "This do ye in remembrance of meMe, this is My body" and after that he said in a a similar way "this is my cup." Jesus was offering Himself to us, so that once he is gone, we will remember what he was here for. Lastly, the worship as christians. We worship God on our own, but in the Mass, we "fully worship him as christians."
Last Supper Analysis
This ideasketch is superior because it is color-coded, easy to understand, features a variety of shapes, and analyzes the Last Supper and its effects.

MR 4.C Last Supper
This is our idea sketch, which analyzes in depth the Last Supper. We broke apart each detail of the event and explained them. We showed how each individual part end up connecting back to the main bubble. We also showed how some of the individual bubbles connect such as Eucharist and eating of the lamb.
Idea Sketch, Piecing it Together, Lecture Video
Carlos, Jacob and I created this Idea sketch that describes/ analyzes specific events in the lecture video. For example, the New Lamb, JC was and is the new lamb of God.

If I was an apostle at the transfiguration, I would have been flippin out. How cool would it have been to have Jesus appear to you by way of a bright light. It would have been kind of scary though to see the bright light until I saw Jesus. Having that conversation with him would definitely have strenghtened my faith and would have inspired me to teach others more about the Word of God and how to get eternal life.
MR 4.C The Transfiguration
We broke down the transfiguration with a deeper knowledge and understanding of the material. We broke apart the Last Supper into two parts then broke it down further. We also broke apart the Transfiguration into 3 parts. We then connected the three parts with our knowledge of the material.
Exit Ticket 10/20/14
If I were an apostle that witnessed the Transfiguration, I would be in awe. To be in the company of the entire Holy Trinity in one event is nothing short of mind-boggling. Also, I would never lose faith or stray from Jesus, as I had just witnessed His divinity right in front of me. I would also feel alarmed at Jesus' death, which was talked about, as it would literally be God dying. All in all, it would change my life, as I'm sure it did for James, John, and Peter.
Exit Ticket -- Reflection of the Transfiguration
If I were one of the Apostles that witnessed the Transfiguration, it would effect me in many ways. One of theses ways would be in extraordinary belief. By this I mean, that I would now that I am truly witnessing the physical appearance of the Son of the Living God. This physical appearance is important because the majority of God's interaction with man isn't through physical means. I wouldn't just be in extraordinary belief, but i would also be terrified. When you look at Jesus, you see a man, and seeing a man shine so bright that it is white, that would be terrifying. That simply just doesn't happen to any ordinary man.
If i truly witnessed this event, my understanding and/ or belief of God would greatly increase. If I had doubts before, I most certainly would not have the same doubts afterwards.

MR 4.B Defeating the Prince of Darkness
Jesus and God are clearly the largest words in the picture which would make sense because they are also the most important figures in the Bible. However, the Devil is also the second largest font becauese although he is the enemy, he is also important for us to recognize so we can deny him.
MR 4.B Defeating the Prince of Darkness
Three words stand out to me: Devil, God, and Jesus. God is the largest word in the picture and is placed above the Devil and Jesus. In our catholic views, God is above all things. God, being the father is above Jesus (the Son). And Jesus, being the second largest, is above the Devil. Both God and Jesus are above satan.
MR 4.B Defeating the Prince of Darkness
The words God and Jesus stand out in this picutre because they are the biggest. This also means that they are the most important. The devil is the third biggest word. This shows how often the devil is used in society today. Even some of the tiny words in this picture are very important such as worship and belive. These words may be little but have significance in that if you must worship/believe in God.
MR 4.B Defeating the Prince of Darkness
What stands out to me is that God and Jesus are the biggest words. No matter the temptation, God prevails. Also, this story points out the difference between Jesus' divine and human natures, and this is shown in this picture. Jesus is distinct from God the Father in the way that he has both human and divine natures, which are both tempted in this story.

MR 4.A Mid Level Activity
This is our idea sketch. It is the best idea sketch because it offers the best information in the least amount of words. You will learn a lot and it won't take a long time! It also shows the connections between the Wedding at Cana and the Baptism of Chirst in the Jordan. They both include the element of water which symbolizes the clensing of sin by the Holy Spirit.
What i learned from EDUcannon videos 10/16/14
I learned that the word paschal directly translates to the word Easter.
MR 4.A Mid Level Activity
Our ideasketch is the best because it offers the information concisely and clearly. It is not too much explanation, and it is color coded. The color organizes the thoughts that we conveyed, and provides an easy-to-understand format. Lastly, we analyzed the deeper meanings and big-picture implications well.
MR 4.A Mid Level Activity
Topher, Sam, and I created this Idea Sketch that is different from everyone else's because, in detail, it explains why both the Wedding at Cana and the Baptism of JC have theological significances. We used our own knowledge as well as the knowledge from the lecture videos. We also made another box titled "Connection" that tells you about how/ why these two events are connected.I Learned...
The term "Paschal" is described as 'of or relating to Easter.' In Mass, we celebrate the death, resurrection and ascension of JC, which is the Paschal Mystery. They tie into each other because we celebrate JC's resurrection at Easter
What I learned 10/16/14
In the two educanon videos assigned for homework, the thing that stood out to me was the details of the Wedding at Cana story, and the conclusions that we can draw, including a good example of honoring thy mother and father as Jesus did.
